The Strange Visitor

A woman was sitting at her reel one night; And still she sat, and still she reeled, and still she wished for company.

ある晩、一人の女が糸車に向かって座っていた。そして女はずっと座って、ずっと糸を巻いて、ずっと話し相手がほしいと思っていた。

In came a pair of broad broad soles, and sat down at the fireside;

そこへ広い広い足の裏がひと組入ってきて、炉ばたに座った。

And still she sat, and still she reeled, and still she wished for company.

そして女はずっと座って、ずっと糸を巻いて、ずっと話し相手がほしいと思っていた。

In came a pair of small small legs, and sat down on the broad broad soles;

そこへ細い細いすねがひと組入ってきて、広い広い足の裏の上に座った。

And still she sat, and still she reeled, and still she wished for company.

そして女はずっと座って、ずっと糸を巻いて、ずっと話し相手がほしいと思っていた。

In came a pair of thick thick knees, and sat down on the small small legs;

そこへ太い太いひざがひと組入ってきて、細い細いすねの上に座った。

And still she sat, and still she reeled, and still she wished for company.

そして女はずっと座って、ずっと糸を巻いて、ずっと話し相手がほしいと思っていた。

In came a pair of thin thin thighs, and sat down on the thick thick knees;

そこへ痩せた痩せたももがひと組入ってきて、太い太いひざの上に座った。

And still she sat, and still she reeled, and still she wished for company.

そして女はずっと座って、ずっと糸を巻いて、ずっと話し相手がほしいと思っていた。

In came a pair of huge huge hips, and sat down on the thin thin thighs;

そこへでかいでかい腰がひと組入ってきて、痩せた痩せたももの上に座った。

And still she sat, and still she reeled, and still she wished for company.

そして女はずっと座って、ずっと糸を巻いて、ずっと話し相手がほしいと思っていた。

In came a wee wee waist, and sat down on the huge huge hips;

そこへちっちゃなちっちゃな胴が入ってきて、でかいでかい腰の上に座った。

And still she sat, and still she reeled, and still she wished for company.

そして女はずっと座って、ずっと糸を巻いて、ずっと話し相手がほしいと思っていた。

In came a pair of broad broad shoulders, and sat down on the wee wee waist;

そこへ広い広い肩がひと組入ってきて、ちっちゃなちっちゃな胴の上に座った。

And still she sat, and still she reeled, and still she wished for company.

そして女はずっと座って、ずっと糸を巻いて、ずっと話し相手がほしいと思っていた。

In came a pair of small small arms, and sat down on the broad broad shoulders;

そこへ細い細い腕がひと組入ってきて、広い広い肩の上に座った。

そこへでかいでかい手がひと組入ってきて、細い細い腕の上に座った。

In came a small small neck, and sat down on the broad broad shoulders;

そこへ細い細い首が入ってきて、広い広い肩の上に座った。

In came a huge huge head, and sat down on the small small neck.

そこへでかいでかい頭が入ってきて、細い細い首の上に座った。

“How did you get such broad broad feet?” quoth the woman.

「どうしてそんなに広い広い足になったの」と女は言った。

“Much tramping, much tramping” (gruffly).

「たんと歩いた、たんと歩いた」(ぶっきらぼうに)。

“How did you get such small small legs?”

「どうしてそんなに細い細いすねになったの。」

“Aih-h-h!-late--and wee-e-e--moul” (whiningly).

「ああああ!——おそーく——ちょびっとの——めしいい」(泣きごとのように)。

“How did you get such thick thick knees?”

「どうしてそんなに太い太いひざになったの。」

“Much praying, much praying” (piously).

「たんと祈った、たんと祈った」(信心深げに)。

“How did you get such thin thin thighs?”

「どうしてそんなに痩せた痩せたももになったの。」

“Aih-h-h!--late--and wee-e-e--moul” (whiningly).

「ああああ!——おそーく——ちょびっとの——めしいい」(泣きごとのように)。

“How did you get such big big hips?”

「どうしてそんなにでかいでかい腰になったの。」

“Much sitting, much sitting” (gruffly).

「たんと座った、たんと座った」(ぶっきらぼうに)。

“How did you get such a wee wee waist?”

「どうしてそんなにちっちゃなちっちゃな胴になったの。」

“Aih-h-h!--late--and wee-e-e-moul” (whiningly).

「ああああ!——おそーく——ちょびっとの——めしいい」(泣きごとのように)。

“How did you get such broad broad shoulders?”

「どうしてそんなに広い広い肩になったの。」

“With carrying broom, with carrying broom” (gruffly).

「ほうきを担いで、ほうきを担いで」(ぶっきらぼうに)。

“How did you get such small small arms?”

「どうしてそんなに細い細い腕になったの。」

“Aih-h-h!--late--and wee-e-e--moul” (whiningly.)

「ああああ!——おそーく——ちょびっとの——めしいい」(泣きごとのように)。

“How did you get such huge huge hands?”

「どうしてそんなにでかいでかい手になったの。」

“Threshing with an iron flail, threshing with an iron flail” (gruffly).

「鉄の殻竿で脱穀して、鉄の殻竿で脱穀して」(ぶっきらぼうに)。

“How did you get such a small small neck?”

「どうしてそんなに細い細い首になったの。」

“Aih-h-h!--late--wee-e-e--moul” (pitifully).

「ああああ!——おそーく——ちょびっとの——めしいい」(あわれっぽく)。

“How did you get such a huge huge head?”

「どうしてそんなにでかいでかい頭になったの。」

“Much knowledge, much knowledge” (keenly).

「たんと知った、たんと知った」(鋭く)。

“What do you come for?”

「何をしに来たの。」

“FOR YOU!” (At the top of the voice, with a wave of the arm and a stamp of the feet.)

「おまえを取りに!」(声をかぎりに、腕を振り、足を踏み鳴らして。)
