Ángángujuk

It is said that Ángángujuk's father was very strong. They had no other neighbours, but lived there three of them all alone. One day when the mother was going to scrape meat from a skin, she let the child play at kayak outside in the passage, near the entrance. And now and again she called to him: "Ángángujuk!" And the child would answer from outside.

アーンガーングユクの父はたいそう力が強かったという。一家にはほかに隣人がおらず、三人きりで暮らしていた。ある日、母親は皮から肉をこそげ落とそうとして、子どもを入口の近くの外の通路でカヤックごっこをさせておいた。そしてときどき「アーンガーングユク!」と呼んだ。すると子どもは外から返事をするのだった。

And once she called in this way, and called again, for there came no answer. And when no answer came again, she left the skin she was scraping, and began to search about. But she could not find the child. And now she began to feel greatly afraid, dreading her husband's return. And while she stood there feeling great fear of her husband, he came out from behind a rock, dragging a seal behind him.

そしてあるとき、そうやって呼んだが返事がないので、また呼んだ。そしてまた返事がないので、こそげていた皮をほうり出して、あたりを探しはじめた。けれども子どもは見つからなかった。そこで母親は、夫が帰ってくるのが恐ろしくなって、たいそう怯えはじめた。そして夫のことを思ってひどく怯えながら立っていると、夫がアザラシを引きずりながら岩のうしろから出てきた。

Then he came forward and said:

それから夫は近づいてきて言った。

"Where is our little son?"

「わたしたちの坊やはどこだ。」

"He vanished away from me this morning, after you had gone, when he was playing kayak-man out in the passage."

「今朝あなたが出かけたあと、外の通路でカヤック漕ぎごっこをしているうちに、いなくなってしまったのです。」

And when she had said this, her husband answered:

妻がそう言うと、夫は答えた。

"It is you, wicked old hag, who have killed him. And now I will kill you."

「お前が殺したのだな、この性悪ばばあめ。今度はわしがお前を殺してやる。」

To this his wife answered:

これに妻は答えた。

"Do not kill me yet, but wait a little, and first seek out one who can ask counsel of the spirits."

「まだ殺さないで、少し待って。まず霊にお伺いを立てられる人を探してください。」

And now the husband began eagerly to search for such a one. He came home bringing wizards with him, and bade them try what they could do, and when they could not find the child, he let them go without giving them so much as a bite of meat.

そこで夫はそういう人を熱心に探しはじめた。夫は魔法使いたちを連れて家に帰ってきて、何ができるかやってみろと言いつけた。そして魔法使いたちが子どもを見つけられないと、肉ひと口も与えずに帰らせた。

And seeing that none of them could help him, he now sought for a very clever finder of hidden things, and meeting such a one at last, he took him home. Then he fastened a stick to his face, and made him lie down on the bedplace on his back.

そして誰も助けにならないので、夫は今度は、隠れたものを見つけるのがたいそう上手な者を探し、とうとうそういう者に出会って家へ連れてきた。それから夫はその者の顔に棒を結わえつけ、寝台にあおむけに寝かせた。

And now he worked away with him until the spirit came. And when this had happened, the spirit finder declared:

そして霊が来るまでその者に取り組んだ。そしてそうなると、霊を見つける者は告げた。

"It would seem that spirits have here found a difficult task. He is up in a place between two great cliffs, and two old inland folk are looking after him."

「どうやら霊たちはここで難しい仕事にぶつかったようだ。子どもは二つの大きな崖のあいだの高いところにいて、内陸の民の年寄りが二人でその子の面倒を見ている。」

Then they stopped calling spirits, and wandered away towards the east. They walked and walked, and at last they sighted a lot of houses. And when they came nearer, they saw the smoke coming out from all the smoke holes. It was the heat from inside coming out so. And the father looked in through a window, and saw that they were quarrelling about his child, and the child was crying.

そこでみなは霊を呼ぶのをやめて、東のほうへさまよい出た。歩きに歩いて、とうとうたくさんの家が見えてきた。そして近づいてみると、どの煙穴からも煙が出ているのが見えた。それはなかの熱気がそうやって出てきているのだった。そして父親が窓からなかをのぞくと、人々が自分の子のことで言い争っていて、子どもは泣いていた。

"Who is to look after him?"

「誰がこの子の面倒を見るんだ。」

So he heard them saying inside the house; each one was eager to have the child. When the father saw this, he was very angry.

家のなかで人々がそう言うのが聞こえた。誰もが子どもを欲しがっていた。父親はこれを見るとたいそう怒った。

And the people inside asked the child:

そしてなかの人々は子どもに尋ねた。

"What would you like to eat?"

「何が食べたい。」

"No," said the child.

「いらない」と子どもは言った。

"Will you have seal meat?"

「アザラシの肉はどうだい。」

"No," said the child.

「いらない」と子どもは言った。

And there was nothing he cared to have. Therefore they asked him at last:

そして子どもが欲しがるものは何もなかった。そこでとうとう人々は尋ねた。

"Do you want to go home very much?"

「おうちに帰りたくてたまらないのかい。」

Ángángujuk answered quickly: "Yes." And his father was very greatly angered by now. And said to those with him:

アーンガーングユクはすぐに「うん」と答えた。そしてこのときには父親はたいそう怒っていた。そして連れの者たちに言った。

"Try now to magic them to sleep."

「さあ、あいつらに魔法をかけて眠らせてみろ。」

And now the wizard began calling down a magic sleep upon those in the hut, and one by one they sank to sleep and began to snore. And fewer and fewer remained awake; at last there were only two. But then one of those two began to yawn, and at last rolled over and snored.

そこで魔法使いは小屋にいる者たちに魔法の眠りを呼び下ろしはじめ、一人また一人と眠りに沈んでいびきをかきはじめた。そして起きている者はどんどん少なくなり、とうとう二人だけになった。けれどもそれからその二人のうちの一人があくびをしはじめ、とうとう寝返りを打っていびきをかいた。

And now the great finder of hidden things began calling down sleep with all his might over that one remaining. And at last he too began to move towards the sleeping place. Then he began to yawn a little, and at last he also rolled over.

そして偉大な隠れたものを見つける者は、残った一人の上に力いっぱい眠りを呼び下ろしはじめた。するととうとうその者も寝床のほうへ動きはじめた。それから少しあくびをしはじめ、とうとうその者も寝返りを打った。

Now Ángángujuk's father went in quickly, and now he caught up his son. But now the child had no clothes on. And looking for them, he saw them hung up on the drying frame. But the house was so high that they had to poke down the clothes with poles.

そこでアーンガーングユクの父親はすばやくなかへ入って、息子を抱き上げた。けれども子どもは服を着ていなかった。そして服を探すと、干し枠に掛けてあるのが見えた。けれども家があまりに高いので、みなは棒で服をつつき落とさなければならなかった。

At last they came out, and walked and walked and came farther on. And it was now beginning to be light. As soon as they came to the place, they cut the moorings of the umiak, and hastily made all ready, and rowed out to the farthest islands. They had just moved away from land when they saw a number of people opposite the house.

とうとうみなは外へ出て、歩きに歩いて先へ進んだ。そしてもう明るくなりはじめていた。自分たちの土地に着くやいなや、みなはウミアクのもやい綱を切り、急いで支度を整えて、いちばん遠くの島々へ漕ぎ出した。陸を離れたばかりのところで、家の向かいに大勢の人が現れるのが見えた。

But when the inland folk saw they had already moved out from the land, they went up to the house and beat it down, beating down roof and walls and all that there was of it.

けれども内陸の民は、一家がもう陸から離れてしまったのを見ると、家へ上っていって家を打ち壊した。屋根も壁も、そこにあるものは何もかも打ち壊した。

After that time, Ángángujuk's parents never again took up their dwelling on the mainland.

それからというもの、アーンガーングユクの両親は二度と本土に住まいを構えなかった。
