The Cock and Hen That Went to the Dovrefell

Once on a time there was a Hen that had flown up, and perched on an oak-tree for the night. When the night came, she dreamed that unless she got to the Dovrefell, the world would come to an end. So that very minute she jumped down, and set out on her way. When she had walked a bit she met a Cock.

むかしむかし、一羽のめんどりが飛び上がって、夜を過ごそうと樫の木にとまった。夜になると、ドヴレ山へ行かなければ世界が終わってしまう、という夢を見た。そこですぐさま飛び下りて、旅に出た。しばらく歩くと、おんどりに出会った。

“Good day, Cocky-Locky”, said the Hen.

「こんにちは、コッキー・ロッキー」とめんどりは言った。

“Good day, Henny-Penny”, said the Cock, “whither away so early.”

「こんにちは、ヘニー・ペニー」とおんどりは言った。「こんなに早くどこへ行くんだい」

“Oh, I’m going to the Dovrefell, that the world mayn’t come to an end”, said the Hen.

「ああ、世界が終わらないように、ドヴレ山へ行くところなの」とめんどりは言った。

“Who told you that, Henny-Penny”, said the Cock.

「誰がそう言ったんだい、ヘニー・ペニー」とおんどりは言った。

“I sat in the oak and dreamt it last night”, said the Hen.

「ゆうべ樫の木にとまって夢に見たの」とめんどりは言った。

“I’ll go with you”, said the Cock.

「ぼくも一緒に行くよ」とおんどりは言った。

Well! they walked on a good bit, and then they met a Duck.

さて、二羽はかなり歩き、それからあひるに出会った。

“Good day, Ducky-Lucky”, said the Cock.

「こんにちは、ダッキー・ラッキー」とおんどりは言った。

“Good day, Cocky-Locky”, said the Duck, “whither away so early?”

「こんにちは、コッキー・ロッキー」とあひるは言った。「こんなに早くどこへ行くんだい」

“Oh, I’m going to the Dovrefell, that the world mayn’t come to an end”, said the Cock.

「ああ、世界が終わらないように、ドヴレ山へ行くところさ」とおんどりは言った。

“Who told you that, Cocky-Locky?”

「誰がそう言ったんだい、コッキー・ロッキー」

“Henny-Penny”, said the Cock.

「ヘニー・ペニーさ」とおんどりは言った。

“Who told you that, Henny-Penny?” said the Duck.

「誰がそう言ったんだい、ヘニー・ペニー」とあひるは言った。

“I sat in the oak and dreamt it last night”, said the Hen.

「ゆうべ樫の木にとまって夢に見たの」とめんどりは言った。

“I’ll go with you”, said the Duck.

「ぼくも一緒に行くよ」とあひるは言った。

So they went off together, and after a bit they met a Goose.

そこで三羽は一緒に出かけ、しばらくするとがちょうに出会った。

“Good day, Goosey-Poosey”, said the Duck.

「こんにちは、グーシー・プーシー」とあひるは言った。

“Good day, Ducky-Lucky”, said the Goose, “whither away so early?”

「こんにちは、ダッキー・ラッキー」とがちょうは言った。「こんなに早くどこへ行くんだい」

“I’m going to the Dovrefell, that the world mayn’t come to an end”, said the Duck.

「世界が終わらないように、ドヴレ山へ行くところさ」とあひるは言った。

“Who told you that, Ducky-Lucky?” asked the Goose.

「誰がそう言ったんだい、ダッキー・ラッキー」とがちょうは尋ねた。

“Cocky-Locky.”

「コッキー・ロッキーさ」

“Who told you that, Cocky-Locky?”

「誰がそう言ったんだい、コッキー・ロッキー」

“Henny-Penny.”

「ヘニー・ペニーさ」

“How you do know that, Henny-Penny?” said the Goose.

「どうしてそんなことが分かるんだい、ヘニー・ペニー」とがちょうは言った。

“I sat in the oak and dreamt it last night, Goosey-Poosey”, said the Hen.

「ゆうべ樫の木にとまって夢に見たの、グーシー・プーシー」とめんどりは言った。

“I’ll go with you”, said the Goose.

「ぼくも一緒に行くよ」とがちょうは言った。

Now when they had all walked along for a bit, a Fox met them.

さて四羽がしばらく一緒に歩いていくと、狐に出会った。

“Good day, Foxsy-Cocksy”, said the Goose.

「こんにちは、フォクシー・コクシー」とがちょうは言った。

“Good day, Goosey-Poosey.”

「こんにちは、グーシー・プーシー」

“Whither away, Foxy-Cocksy?”

「どこへ行くんだい、フォクシー・コクシー」

“Whither away yourself, Goosey-Poosey?”

「そちらこそどこへ行くんだい、グーシー・プーシー」

“I’m going to the Dovrefell that the world mayn’t come to an end”, said the Goose.

「世界が終わらないように、ドヴレ山へ行くところさ」とがちょうは言った。

“Who told you that, Goosey-Poosey?” asked the Fox.

「誰がそう言ったんだい、グーシー・プーシー」と狐は尋ねた。

“Ducky-Lucky.”

「ダッキー・ラッキーさ」

“Who told you that, Ducky-Lucky?”

「誰がそう言ったんだい、ダッキー・ラッキー」

“Cocky-Locky.”

「コッキー・ロッキーさ」

“Who told you that, Cocky-Locky?”

「誰がそう言ったんだい、コッキー・ロッキー」

“Henny-Penny.”

「ヘニー・ペニーさ」

“How do you know that, Henny-Penny?”

「どうしてそんなことが分かるんだい、ヘニー・ペニー」

“I sat in the oak and dreamt last night, that if we don’t get to the Dovrefell, the world will come to an end”, said the Hen.

「ゆうべ樫の木にとまって夢に見たの。ドヴレ山へ行かなければ世界が終わってしまう、って」とめんどりは言った。

“Stuff and nonsense”, said the Fox; “the world won’t come to an end if you don’t get thither. No! come home with me to my earth. That’s far better, for it’s warm and jolly there.”

「ばかばかしい」と狐は言った。「おまえたちがそこへ行かなくても世界は終わりゃしないよ。それより、うちの穴へおいでよ。そのほうがずっといい。暖かくて楽しいからね」

Well, they went home with the Fox to his earth, and when they got in, the Fox laid on lots of fuel, so that they all got very sleepy.

さて一同は狐について穴へ帰った。なかに入ると、狐は薪をたっぷりくべたので、みなたいそう眠くなった。

The Duck and the Goose, they settled themselves down in a corner, but the Cock and Hen flew up on a post. So when the Goose and Duck were well asleep, the Fox, took the Goose and laid him on the embers, and roasted him. The Hen smelt the strong roast meat, and sprang up to a higher peg, and said, half asleep:

あひるとがちょうは隅に落ち着いたが、おんどりとめんどりは柱の上に飛び上がった。そしてがちょうとあひるがぐっすり眠り込むと、狐はがちょうを取って熾火の上にのせ、焼いた。めんどりは肉の焼ける強い匂いを嗅ぎつけ、もっと高い止まり木に飛び上がって、半分眠りながら言った。

Faugh, what a nasty smell! What a nasty smell!

ふん、なんという嫌な匂い。なんという嫌な匂い。

“Oh, stuff”, said the Fox; “it’s only the smoke driven down the chimney; go to sleep again, and hold your tongue.” So the Hen went off to sleep again.

「ああ、ばかばかしい」と狐は言った。「煙突から煙が吹き下ろしてきただけさ。もうひと眠りして、黙っていなよ」そこでめんどりはまた眠りについた。

Now the Fox had hardly got the Goose well down his throat, before he did the very same with the Duck. He took and laid him on the embers, and roasted him for a dainty bit. Then the hen woke up again, and sprung up to a higher peg still.

さて狐はがちょうをすっかり喉に流し込むやいなや、あひるにも同じことをした。あひるを取って熾火の上にのせ、ごちそうに焼いたのだ。するとめんどりはまた目を覚まし、さらに高い止まり木に飛び上がった。

Faugh, what a nasty smell! What a nasty smell!

ふん、なんという嫌な匂い。なんという嫌な匂い。

She said again, and then she got her eyes open, and came to see how the Fox had eaten both the twain, goose and duck; so she flew up to the highest peg of all, and perched there, and peeped up through the chimney.

と彼女はまた言った。それから目をすっかり開けて、狐ががちょうとあひるの二羽を食べてしまったのを見てとった。そこでいちばん高い止まり木に飛び上がってとまり、煙突から上を覗いた。

“Nay, nay; just see what a lovely lot of geese flying yonder”, she said to the Fox.

「まあ、まあ、あそこを見て。がちょうの見事な群れが飛んでいくわ」と彼女は狐に言った。

Out ran Reynard to fetch a fat roast. But while he was gone, the Hen woke up the Cock, and told him how it had gone with Goosey-Poosey and Ducky-Lucky; and so Cocky-Lucky and Henny-Penny flew out through the chimney, and if they hadn’t got to the Dovrefell, it surely would have been all over with the world.

狐のレイナードは肥えた焼き肉を手に入れようと駆け出した。だがそのあいだにめんどりはおんどりを起こし、グーシー・プーシーとダッキー・ラッキーがどうなったかを話した。そこでコッキー・ロッキーとヘニー・ペニーは煙突から飛び出した。そして二羽がドヴレ山にたどり着いていなかったら、世界はきっと終わってしまっていただろう。
